Free America Walkout marks a year of resisting Trump
Today, people are protesting across the United States. They’re rallying. They’re walking off their jobs to mark the one-year anniversary of the inauguration of president Donald Trump.
It’s part of a nationwide protest called the “Free America Walkout.” It’s organized by the Women’s March, the group that led the huge women’s marches against Trump in his first term.
More than 400 events, rallies, and actions are happening throughout the United States. People are braving the cold weather, walking out of jobs and schools and standing up.
Today also marks the one-year anniversary of Stories of Resistance. This is the last episode of Season 1 of Stories of Resistance. Stay tuned for season 2 later this year.

MICHAEL FOX [NARRATION]: “Yankee go home,” that’s the refrain. The crowd sings it in unison in this old black and white video. “Yankee go home. Yankee go home.” The man leading them stands at the mic. He has a thick beard. He plays the Venezuelan quarto. His gaze is defiant… His name is Alí Primera.
He is El Cantor del Pueblo — The People’s Singer
The Venezuelan ambassador of the nueva canción or protest song movement, which spilled across Latin America in the 1960s and ‘70s, and includes others like Mercedes Sosa or Victor Jara.
Alí Primera sings in solidarity. He sings for rights and for justice. He sings in defense of the people… The humble and the working class. He sings against poverty. He sings for change. For social justice. He sings for El Salvador in the 1980s. He sings for Nicaragua. He sings for revolution and for peace.
He sings to demand an end to US imperialism. An end to US intervention and aggression throughout Latin America.

Alí Primera was born on Oct. 31, 1941, in Coro, Venezuela. Born into poverty. From a young age, he worked odd jobs to help his family.
He moved to Caracas in 1960 and began singing and writing songs while studying chemistry at the Central University of Venezuela. Songs like this, played here by the Venezuela band Los Guaraguao.

Alí Primera wrote this song in 1967. He first performed it at a Festival of Protest Songs that same year. It’s called, “It’s Not Enough Just to Pray.” It’s a brutal critique of inequality and the US war in Vietnam.

The 1994 Zapatista Uprising: Resisting NAFTA and corporate capitalism
On January 1, 1994, Indigenous peoples from Chiapas, Mexico, rose up. They took control of city halls in towns across the state. They took the state capital San Cristobal de las Casas. And they held them for days, despite a violent response from Mexico’s military.
This was not just any movement confined to the mountainous jungles of Mexico. It was an Indigenous uprising against injustice. An uprising against neoliberalism. An uprising against globalization and free trade agreements, and it would have deep reverberations. Inspiring people, not just in Mexico, but around the world.

The 1914 Christmas Truce: Resisting on the front lines of WWI
It’s late 1914. December cold in the trenches of the Western Front of World War I. Rations are in short supply. Men shiver… dreaming of home. Wishing they were far away. For months, here in the trenches, the sounds of the machine gun fire have peppered every waking moment. The whining of the bullets. The hissing and the cracking. But this morning—Christmas morning—the guns stop. It’s not planned. It’s spontaneous. But it happens all along the front. And over hundreds of miles of trenches. Silence… And then singing. Soft at first and then louder. Carols. Christmas songs. First, one side sings in German. And then the other in French or English.
It’s the beginning of the Christmas Truce. 100,000 soldiers would participate in the temporary ceasefire. It remains a testament to the humanity in us all. A reminder of the resistance from men on the front lines to the savages of war. Resistance to the orders from above.
